10 Health Commandments for Children

These commandments were written to assist adults - parents, grandparents, guardians, etc. - help their children and grandchildren learn to live a healthier lifestyle.

Provide Fruits and Vegetables

It's vitally important to teach children to accept fruits and vegetables from an early age.  I remember when my daughter Amanda was graduating from formula to baby food, the doctor suggested that I give her vegetables prior to giving her fruit.  Because the fruit was sweeter, she was concerned that Amanda would not accept the vegetables after tasting the fruit.  If a child is accustomed to having potato chips, candy or ice cream for a snack and they develop a weight problem, it's going to be much more difficult to get them to accept fruit and vegetables as a snack.  Even a child without a weight problem needs the vitamins and minerals provided by fruits and vegetables.  However, if your child isn't accustomed to eating fruits and vegetables, don't think it's too late to form that healthy habit.  Please check out How to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables for some creative suggestions.  After that, please visit the download page for a handy chart that can be used to help children (and adults, too!) set and achieve weekly goals pertaining to the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
