Have you given any thought to the goals you'd like to set and achieve? I'm sure that for the majority of us the goals are very similar. For some of us, our desire is to get to our goal weight. Still others might have a goal of losing weight that we've regained. I'm sure there are several people that are hoping to end the year weighing less then they do right now.
There's one problem with these goals. They are too general. We need our goals to be S-M-A-R-T! I encourage all of you to make some S-M-A-R-T goals today! Making S-M-A-R-T goals today will have you armed and ready to realize your health and wellness dreams.
How do you make S-M-A-R-T goals? Like this .....
|
S - SPECIFIC
| |
Make your goals very specific. Instead of saying, "I will lose weight", be specific on how you hope to accomplish this goal. In other words, I will lose weight by exercising more.
|
M - MEASURABLE
| |
Make your goals measurable. Simply stating that you will exercise is not measurable. A measurable goal for exercise would be to exercise 30 minutes, four days a week. You could get very specific and state that you will increase your pace, distance or time every other week with the ultimate goal of reaching a certain pace, distance or time in 30, 60, 90 or 180 days.
|
A - ATTAINABLE
| |
Your goals need to be attainable. You certainly don't want to aspire to run a marathon in 90 days if you've never walked more than a mile at a time. Set a goal that's both challenging and attainable. If your goal is not attainable, you will most likely give up before you are even close to reaching your goal.
|
R - REALISTIC
| |
You want your goals to be realistic so you are motivated to achieve them but also challenging enough so you feel as if you've accomplished something. For instance, if you currently walk 1-2 miles a day, a realistic goal would not be to walk a 1/4 mile a day. Yes, you would certainly reach that goal. However, you won't feel as if you've achieved anything. Remember to challenge yourself, yet be realistic.
|
T - TIMED
| |
Give your goals a timeline. A goal is a dream with a deadline. While a deadline should be drawn in the sand vs. cement, you still should have a date by which to reach your goals. The reason that I say to draw your timeline in the sand vs. the cement is because on occasion it's necessary to reevaluate your goals. Unfortunately, life sometimes interferes with our dreams. A job change, a change in your family situation, financial difficulties, an illness, etc. can sometimes deem it necessary to make changes in our S-M-A-R-T goals.
|
NOW YOU KNOW HOW TO SET S-M-A-R-T GOALS!
| |
Don't feel as if you've failed if you don't reach every goal by every timeline you set for yourself. The fact that you set a goal deserves to be commended. And chances are you are still closer to reaching your health and wellness dreams then you would be if you hadn't set a goal at all. You truly haven't failed until you've given up and quit working towards your dream.
